Miss Roxie Burton works at the Florida Avenue Grill in Washington, D.C. It has been there for over 60 years and they serve everything from Chitterlings to red eye gravy and ham hock sandwiches.
I'm from Danville, Virginia. I grew up working on my father's farm. He grew tobacco, corn, wheat, potatoes, cabbage, string beans, butter beans and peas. We raised all our chickens and we had cows and horses.
I really enjoy waitressing. People say I'm fast, but
you have to be kinda fast in here, especially on the
weekends. I'm 80 years old and I work 5 days a week,
sometimes I work 6 days. I think moving around kinda
helps me at my age, you know. Some people tell me I
should stop work and I say, "Why? Why stop working when
I don't want to and I feel all right?" I think
I feel better working than I do when I'm sitting down
at home. I tried to retire and I didn't like it so I
came back to work. |
